The short answer to this question is yes, mosquitoes do appear to be attracted to certain blood types and their preferred blood type appears to be blood type O.
Many studies have pointed to the fact that, when given a choice, mosquitoes will feed on humans with blood type O over humans with blood type A, B or AB.
The bigger question should be, why are mosquitoes attracted to the blood group O more than other blood types. In this article, I will delve a bit deeper and try to explain why.
Why Are Mosquitoes Attracted To Certain Blood Types?
The different types of blood are decided by how many antigens or lack of antigens are in the blood. It seems that the mosquito is attracted to the lack of antigens found in blood type O.
Antigens can also be secreted in tears, sweat and saliva which could be a reason why mosquitoes will choose their preferred blood supply before even reaching their victim.
So What Are Antigens?
Antigens are chemical substances, in your blood, that decide the bodies immune response. Antigens are made up of polysaccharide, peptides and proteins.
Antigens work by looking at substances in the blood and then forcing the body to produce antibodies.
Any chemical that makes the body produce antibodies is an antigen.
So for instance, the following items are all considered antigens.
Blood Types The Mosquito Has To Choose From
As you can see from the blood type list below, each type has antigens located on the blood cells apart from blood type O which has zero antigens attached to the cells.
- Blood Type A (only antigen A)
- Blood Type B (only antigen B)
- Blood Type AB (antigen A & B)
- Blood Type O (no antigen A or B)
It's Not Just About The Blood
It must be noted that, although mosquitoes appear to prefer blood type O over the other blood types, blood types are not the only factor that a mosquito looks at when choosing a victim.
